Xcom Enemy Within Classes
Story WalkthroughXCOM is a random game. While some things are set in stone, most are not.
General mission strategies are available on the previous page. What missions you get will almost always be random - you'll get something, but nothing is guaranteed.Accordingly, this walkthrough will have to be vague. I'll be giving you some general direction, and I'll point out the achievements you should focus on and think about for the month. My intent is for you to read the month so you know what to do, and then do your best to follow my guide roughly.
- For more help on XCOM: Enemy Within, read our Gene Mods and MEC Trooper Guide. XCOM: Enemy Within Class Builds and Loadouts The following are some recommended level progressions for.
- Enemy Within added a number of new maps, at the time much was made about the maps having more elevated positions so you got more of a 3d feeling to combat. It also removed a couple of maps for various reasons.
You won't have to be spot on - especially if you save and reload frequently. This game allows you to abuse saving/reloading. If you want to ensure you only need one playthrough, you'll need to do this unless you are very good at the game (and you probably aren't reading this guide if you are!). Make sure you save, at the very least, at the start of each mission and once you get back to your base. If anything happens that you could have prepared better for, simply reload and prepare for it.For difficulty, you'll want to pick either Easy or Classic. If you pick Easy, you'll need two playthroughs. Classic will be much harder, but not too hard with saving/reloading.
XCOM 2 has four basic Classes that your soldiers can become. A fifth can later be obtained through playing the game. Each class has it's own strengths and weaknesses, so a good team should be.
I'd pick Classic simply to save yourself some time, but if you really have no idea what you're doing with this game, Easy is a good option as well.Make sure you turn the tutorial on. I'm not going to go through and explain exactly what button to press to do what. The tutorial will help you do this better than I ever could. So please turn it on if you're even remotely unfamiliar with the game (I had it on and I've beaten Enemy Unknown a dozen times - it never hurts to have a refresher).Make sure Operation Progeny is activated (check in advanced options before beginning the game). There are two achievements related to it. Operation Slingshot is entirely optional and I won't be discussing it (no achievements for it).
I do recommend you turn it on, though, as it's easy and you'll make a ton of money from it (and gain access to two end-game weapons very early). There are FOUR MISSIONS you MUST make sure you complete. They will be Council Requests.
One appears randomly, one appears early in the game, and two appear later in the game. They are: Portent, Deluge, Furies, and Newfoundland. Pay attention to your Council Missions and make sure you don't miss these. Better yet, just do every Council Mission.Advancing the story should be avoided. Because the story missions are much easier with better weaponry.
You'll have better weaponry farther into the game. So avoid progressing the story at all until you have full plasma weaponry.
First Few Months March (Month 1)You'll start the game with a group of soldiers. Refer to the previous page if you'd like to know more about the classes. If you did the tutorial, you'll have a Heavy. If you have the tutorial off, what you have will be random.Missions and New EnemiesThere will be six missions and events this month:. First Mission (Static). First Abduction Mission (Static). First UFO Contact (Static).
Second Abduction Mission. Council Mission (Thin Men will begin to appear in all missions). Council ReportStrategyThe first month will be relatively easy to skate through. You'll want to focus on researching defensive gear this month (Weapon Fragments, Experimental Warfare, Alien Materials, Carapace Armor).
For your first Abduction mission, choose whatever will give you Scientists. This is the ONLY time you'll ever want to get Scientists (so that we can get Beam Weapons faster). If you don't like the country which is giving you Scientists, feel free to quit and load a previous save - the countries will be the same but the bonuses will change. You'll want to get a Satellite Uplink started and you'll want to send out at least one more Satellite before the end of the month (in order to maximize the amount of money you get next month). Remember to excavate with plenty of room and build your Satellite Uplinks somewhere expandable, so that you can build more Uplinks nearby. If you can, get Phoenix Cannons on both your Interceptors. These weapons should allow you to handle any UFO that comes your way for now. Finally, you'll also want to build an Officer Training School (if you're not playing on Classic) and get the Squad Size upgrades ASAP. Rapid recovery is also good.
No other bonuses will really be necessary. If you're on Classic, get the Foundry. As soon as it's complete, get Tactical Rigging (requires Experimental Warfare).Base BuildingThis month can be important to start off right. As mentioned above, you'll want to save space. You probably won't have the funds to go down a level, so your top level can look something like.Officer Training School/Genetics Lab - Empty - Satellite Uplink - Access Lift - Foundry - Power Generator - EmptyThis will save you room to expand.
Don't worry if you don't have all these facilities built by the end of the month (you can miss perhaps 1).CombatMake sure your Sniper gets to see plenty of action. You want to get Squadsight ASAP so that she's protected and can inflict massive amounts of damage. Don't be afraid to lob LOTS of grenades. What NOT to Focus OnAdvancing the story is not our priority here.
If you're going for achievements, the game is going to last a while anyway so there's no rush. Save your resources for combat instead of getting the Alien Containment facility and an Arc Thrower. You can do that next month.Grey MarketDon't be afraid to sell everything except Weapon Fragments, Elerium and Alloys. Early-game money can be tough to come by, and you can get everything you need later on just fine.
April (Month 2)Things start ramping up here. Nothing you can't handle.
Grenades will be your best friend.Missions and New EnemiesYou'll encounter two new enemies. Floaters begin to appear on all missions. They will have Light Plasma Rifles. Seekers begin to appear on all missions. Two Abduction Missions. Two UFO Contacts. Terror Attack.
6 Floaters (two groups of 3) and 3 Chryssalids. Portent (the first Operation Progeny mission - COMPLETE THIS). Friends in Low Places (if Slingshot is enabled). Site Recon (if this is the first playthrough on this profile - otherwise it will appear as a Council Mission later). Council ReportCountries to Save and Countries to LoseIt's actually ok to lose all the countries in Africa (if you started there) as you'll keep the bonus no matter what.
Do not prioritize these countries (though don't let them leave if you can reasonably stop it without sacrificing somewhere else). Feel free to lose countries in Asia and Europe as well. Don't get me wrong - save as many as you can.
But if you're going to lose something, Asia and Europe will be safe losses for our purposes.Base BuildingGet another Satellite Uplink (and Satellites to go with it) and get the Foundry so you can research Tactical Rigging if you haven't already. This will allow you to use 7-11 grenades, which will make short work of many enemies. You can start excavating more if you need.At some point this month or next month, you can get a Cybernetics Lab and a Genetics Lab. Both will be needed later on.SatellitesBy the end of this month, you can have as many as 12 available satellites. Make sure you begin building Satellite Uplinks with AT LEAST 15 days left until the Council Report. If it's less than that, just wait until next month. You don't need 12 (and likely won't have them), but these should be a continuous priority throughout your playing until you have all countries covered.Abduction MissionsSave countries over getting a bonus.
If you don't mind saving and reloading, you can keep shuffling the bonuses until you get a good one with the country you want to save. Engineers and then money are usually your best bets.ResearchKeep progressing toward Beam Weapons. When you're done, you might also want to go for a Thin Man Autopsy. Otherwise, keep researching various weaponry to progress. If you have been doing Slingshot missions, you'll get the ability to research two fusion weapons.
These weapons are extremely powerful and worth getting a few months down the line. Right now, they will simply take too long.Site ReconThis is another mission that SHOULD appear on your first playthrough after your first encounter with Cryssalids. However, it will not trigger normally if you started a game and then quit (I did this).
If it doesn't appear this month, rest assured it will eventually appear as part of a random pool of Council Missions). See below for details.MedalsYou'll begin to get medals.
See the New Enemy Within Content page to see what they do. They are limited and will have a related achievement later, so only use them if you have more than one. Your sniper is always a good soldier to receive the medal.AchievementsThere are a few achievements it will be reasonably possible to earn this month. You won't earn them all, and that's ok. Just make sure you keep them in mind moving forward. If you got a Genetics Lab, upgrading a soldier will give you an achievement.
You'll also encounter a new enemy type this month. It is the Seeker. When you encounter them, they will go invisible and eventually attack a teammate and suffocate them. Normally, you'll want to pull back and go on overwatch to stop the Seekers.
However, the achievement comes from killing a Seeker as it suffocates a teammate. Thus, you want to back off and wait. A seeker will attack and then you can manually shoot it. I will note that this achievement will almost invariably appear at some point in the game. You don't need to go out of the way to get it.
A Note on Special MissionsPortent - This mission is necessary to get achievements and is part of Operation Progeny. A French convoy has been attacked! It's a simple escort mission. You'll be fighting tons of Thin Men. Simply make your way to the VIP, then escort her away. More enemies will spawn as you get closer to the extraction.Deluge - This mission gets an achievement.
It will appear after the Base Defense (we haven't done that yet). You'll have 10 turns to move all the way across a bridge and get to a truck. There will be many valves you can turn to gain extra turns - this will be necessary to complete the mission. The recommended strategy is to send 1-2 Snipers up into one of the tall towers near the beginning. Turn the valve there and then camp for the rest of the mission.
The dam is long and narrow, and your Sniper will see almost everything thanks to Squadsight. As always, grenades and rockets are great at clearing groups quickly. Site Recon - This mission can appear as a Council Mission at any point in the game after your first playthrough. On your first playthrough, it should appear aftere you first encounter Cryssalids. There will be LOTS of Cryssalids. Find a good place to park your sniper. Then send your MEC Trooper into the boat to the objective.
Xcom Enemy Within 4 Sale
Once you've activated the objective, it's time to get out ASAP. You can basically avoid Cryssalids that continually spawn by moving quickly and thanks to your head start (since you only sent one soldier to the objective).
All soldiers need to make it to extraction to save them (though you can leave the mission with people still on the ground if they're expendable). May (Month 3)Missions and New EnemiesA month full of scripted content!. Mutons will begin to appear on all missions. I recommend making the Covert Operative be a Sniper you're not otherwise using (and you should pick the ability that allows you to deal more damage with Pistols, when available). The achievement requires you to kill three EXALT operatives with your covert operative.
This is easily accomplished by using a Plasma Pistol later in the game and weakening the enemies with your other soldiers first (use explosives to deal exact damage with no possibility of a critical hit). Snipers that can deal two more damage with pistols are ideal to secure kills. After a brief period of time, the Covert Operative will need to be extracted. You'll be sent on a mission to do this. To complete the mission, you'll need to complete one of two different objectives.
Then you'll need to extract your soldiers and the operative. The operative is guaranteed a rank up.One of the objectives, Covert Data Recovery, requires you to protect an encoder and a transmitter. To get the achievement, simply send all your soldiers to the encoder. EXALT cannot hack the encoder if there is a soldier in range (think King of the Hill), so simply sit your MEC Trooper inside and EXALT will have no hope. They'll run at you 1-3 at a time and get wiped out fairly easily.
End GameBy the end of May, you should have a rough handle on the game. Research should be moving along well. At this point, we can begin to focus on more achievements.
The order is really up to you and what you're comfortable with. You can approach them from almost any order, as long as you plan ahead. Thus, my recommendation is to read the rest of the walkthrough from here so that you know what to expect. Then you can finish your playthrough with a plan. Here's what I'll do for the rest of the walkthrough:.
Provide a vague gameplan about how to continue building the XCOM force. Provide a look into the months ahead.
Cover all the remaining miscellaneous achievements you'll need to complete. Go over story progression and how to actually complete the game. The GameplanLet's go over everything you'll need to know to make sure you keep a competitive force that's well-prepared to get the rest of the achievements in the game.ResearchWeapons are very important - all kinds. I'd work to get one Fusion Lance per continent fairly quickly. This is a weapon for your aircraft that can take down basically any alien ship.
Other good weapons include:. Plasma Rifle (not Light Plasma Rifle - this is the prerequisite for all the best weapons in the game). Plasma Sniper (the best weapon in the game - bar none). Heavy Plasma (weapons for Heavies and MEC Troopers). SHIV Plasma (this is a Foundry project - the prerequisite is Heavy Plasma). Guided Fusion Launcher (for your Heavy - it's a rocket launcher with much better accuracy)You can focus on armor after this. If you're abusing save/reload, you frankly do not need armor as you have nothing to fear from death.MeldAt this point, you should have a LOT of Meld.
You'll continue to get more, so don't worry if you've spent some of it. If you want to know what to do with it, the miscellaneous achievement section will give you all the guidance you need. For now, feel free to upgrade a single MEC Trooper to level 3. You'll also eventually need a soldier with Adrenal Neurosympathy (Sniper), one gene mod on each of your soldiers, and one soldier (Sniper) with five upgrades.Take note - you don't need to have all these upgrades at once. In fact, you likely won't have enough Meld to do it. So pick what sounds interesting to you and build toward that, but make sure you save most of your Meld.
If you want my advice, I'd get a level 2 MEC Trooper and Adrenal Neurosympathy. The rest is extra you probably don't need.SatellitesGet as much coverage over the entire planet as you can.Abduction MissionsThese will go away once you have full satellite coverage.MedalsMake sure you save at least one medal of each type. You will need them at the end of the game for an achievement.Base BuildingYour base should be coming along decently right now. Keep focusing on the satellite uplinks (or a nexus). Workshops can help provide the necessary engineers, but don't build more than absolutely necessary.
Steam power can be used if it's extremely convenient, but one Elerium Generator should be enough. Ensure you save enough room for all your story mode buildings. You'll need a Psionic Lab, Gallop Chamber, and a Hyperwave Relay.Grey MarketDon't forget to sell your materials in the grey market for extra funds. Future Months June (Month 4)Missions and New EnemiesThe first of many standard months:. Cyberdisc and Drones begin to appear in all missions. Tingling SensationFirst, you need to get a soldier with the Bioelectric Skin gene mod. Next, send your soldiers recklessly into rooms of a UFO until you find a weak enemy very close to a wall.
Then reload your save. Sneak around and put the modded soldier next to the wall.
Xcom Enemy Within Classes
Then throw grenades or rockets around the wall (the guided fusion launcher helps, and you can blow the wall up as long as no soldier can see the enemy). What you're looking to do is kill an enemy that is glowing through the wall (it will be a hazy blue fog). If you do so and no soldier actually sees it happen, the achievement is yours. Mental MinefieldThis requires a soldier with the Neural Feedback gene mod. Once you have the Hyperwave Relay (from a story mission), you can see what units are on each alien ship before you strike it down. Go on a mission that has a Sectoid Commander and take the modded soldier.Play normally and find the Sectoid Commander. Kill everything else and weaken him.
He might run and that's fine. If he does, chase him with only your modded soldier. If he doesn't, move all your other soldiers away (kill any mind controlled soldiers - you can always reload the save). When he tries to use a psychic power on your modded soldier, he will immediately deal 10 damage to himself. If he was weakened, he will die and you'll get your achievement. Completing the GameIf you've done everything above, you're ready to complete the story. You may already have some of these steps done and that's perfectly fine.
I even encourage it. I'll give you a quick run-through of each of the objectives and what you need to do to complete it.Capture an OutsiderTo get the ball rolling, we'll need to capture an Outsider from an alien UFO.
First, you'll need to construct an Alien Containment facility in your base. You'll also need to build an Arc Thrower in the Foundry and equip it to a soldier.
Go on a UFO Contact mission. In the main area of the UFO you should find an Outsider. Weaken it with a pistol if you can, clear out all the enemies, and then approach it with your Arc Thrower soldier. When in range, use the Arc Thrower to capture the Outsider. The Alien BaseNext we'll want to research the Outsider Shard. This will reveal the location of an Alien Base and will allow you to make the Skeleton Key. Make the key and you can assault the base. The Alien Base is a static environment.
My suggestion is to take things very slowly. Always get into position with overwatch and move forward one soldier per turn. It can get boring, but it ensures you do not die. At the very end of the Alien Base is a Sectoid Commander. If this is your first time encountering one, I suggest trying to capture it with the Arc Thrower if you can simply so you don't need to worry about it later.
This is easy to do by moving your Arc Thrower soldier around the very top of the final room out of sight of all enemies. Then you can weaken the Commander with your other soldiers and drop down on him and use the Arc Thrower in one turn without fear of Mind Control.XCOM Base DefenseThe month after you assault the Alien Base, the aliens will attack XCOM. You'll be given control of your highest-ranked soldiers with whatever equipment they currently have on. You'll also be given a multitude of XCOM grunts which are expendable. The first room will be mission control. Position your soldiers around the room so they have line of sight in all directions. This is a good time to take note of a possible achievement which requires you to kill four aliens with XCOM base personnel. This is easily done by weakening enemies with your other soldiers and then killing the alien with a frag grenade tossed by your base personnel.
This achievement is missable, so make sure you don't complete the mission without the kills. It's easy to get it in the first room, so I suggest focusing on it first before the stronger enemies come out (and so that you can use the personnel as fodder later on). Next you will move into another area of the base. Set up your soldiers facing away from mission control and simply wait.
The aliens will come to you a few at a time. With your XCOM base personnel at the front lines, you can make sure they take the brunt of the alien attack while your competent squad members seal the deal.If you clear everything and the mission doesn't finish, make a sweep of the entire level. Occasionally some enemies will hide in corners instead of attacking. It should be easy to mop them up and complete the mission.
Select Tools, then Install, and then Smart View.Proceed through the installation wizard, and when installation is complete, click Finish. Otherwise, it is smartview.exe.If you have installed and configured EPM Workspace, you can launch the Smart View installer from within EPM Workspace. Berlin strings 2.5 install timing belt.
Finding the Alien ShipWith the base defended, it's safe to begin finding the alien ship. Research Hyperwave Communication. Next, build the Hyperwave Relay facility. This will allow you to see what each alien ship is carrying. You should quickly find a scripted Overseer UFO. Launch an attack on this and you'll encounter your first Ethereal (basically a stronger, more psychic Sectoid). Completing the mission will reward you with the Ethereal Device.
Research it to gain the ability to build the Gollop Chamber.Next, construct the Psionic Labs if you haven't already. Get a soldier with the gift by selecting soldiers and testing them in the barracks (Anette Durand, the soldier from the Deluge mission, is guaranteed to have the gift). Build Psi Armor in the Foundry and equip it to the soldier with the gift. Now, and this is important, give one of each of the 5 medals to the soldier with the gift.
This single soldier must have all 5. If you don't have enough, then you will need to restart the game to get this next achievement.Send your soldier with 5 medals and psi armor into the Gollop Chamber once it's built.
This will trigger the point of of no return. Select your squad to assault the alien ship and you will get an achievement during the loading screen if your soldier has all 5 medals. Now, I would like to note that if you are playing on Easy, you can stop now. There's no achievement for completing the game on any difficulty, so you may as well start over on Classic now that you understand the game and get that achievement.
If you're already on Classic, we only need to finish the Temple Base Assault.Temple Base AssaultHere we are. The last battle. This is a gauntlet of every enemy type you've faced (except Seekers and Mechtoids). The map is designed as a long hallway. The first room will have a Sectoid Commander and two Sectoids. A little farther in you'll encounter two Cyberdiscs with three drones- one Disc on each side of the map.The second room will have a Heavy Floater and four Floaters.
One turn after you enter the room, 3 Chryssalids will spawn. The third room will have three Thin Men in a tight area. Watch the poison. The fourth room will have four Mutons and a Berserker. The fifth room will have two Sectopods.
Using disabling shot with a sniper can be an effective way to shut these down. It will disable one for one turn. After the Sectopods are dead, two Muton Elites will teleport into the back of the room. The final room has the Uber Ethereal, two Ethereals, and some Muton Elites in it. Your only concern is the Uber Ethereal - kill it and the game is complete.

I find it easiest to simply open the door and send your sniper in against the wall right next to the door (you won't discover the enemies this way, so you have time to position). On the next turn, send a soldier in to get sight on the Uber Ethereal. Then simply use the sniper to kill it. Most of the time you'll be able to. If you don't, then you can use rockets or grenades to finish him off. With that, the game should be complete. If you never got a squad upgrade and played on classic, you'll get the final achievement and a well-earned 1000G.
